JOHN ROBERTSON - Comedian and Event MC

JOHN ROBERTSON - Comedian and Event MC

John Robertson is the next big thing in Australian stand-up comedy. An experienced headliner and corporate MC, a cult personality, a wild man and a thoughtful lover, he is a high-energy bundle of impressions, pop culture, satire, improv, one-liners and ukelele solos. His shows are smart, commanding, witty, surrea l and lock-up-your daughters charming.

Capable of just about anything, John has been MC and performed at events as diverse as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Supanova Pop Culture Expo, Wai-Con - The Western Australian Anime Convention and the Under The Blue Moon Goth Festival. To the best of his knowledge, he is the only Australian comedian to have ever interviewed a Dalek.

He has performed with: Wayne Brady (Whose Line Is It Anyway), Mark Watson (UK), Jim Jeffries, Jamie Kilstein (USA), Fiona O'Loughlin, Kitty Flanagan, Jeff Garcia (USA), John Moloney (UK), Jeff Green (UK), Tommy Dean, Tom Ballard, Wil Anderson, Austen Tayshus, Shihad, Drapht, Daryl Braithewaite, Muscles, Justin Hamilton, Dave Callan, Dave Grant, Karl Urban, a giant robot,  sunken submarine and 300 dancing teenagers dressed as anime characters.

In 2010, John toured his fourth solo show, A Nifty History of Evil, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for a sell-out season. Performing 44 shows in 22 days, he took home the Edinburgh DarkChat award for "Best Comedy Performance". The BBC called it "A hidden gem...it's all very funny stuff and Robertson is a funny and engaging performer." A Nifty History was also performed by invitation at Sydney's The Comedy Store, as well as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Perth's Wild West Comedy Festival, where it took out the Critics Choice and Artist's Choice awards. Zoo Magazine has named John one of its Top 10 Young Aussie Comics.

John First tried stand-up because a girl at university asked him to. He won the Laugh Resort Best New Comedian award in 2003 and auditioned for Australian Idol the same year, creating a moment of madness that has since become stuff of media legend.

In 2005, John bowed out of stand-up for a year to concentrate on acting. His first one-man show, Killing Hun in the Sun saw him play a 400 year old war veteran who enjoys killing children. Quirky and gruesome, the play was nominated for the Equity Guild Award for Best New Script and toured to the Melbourne Fringe and Artrage Festivals in 2006.

In 2008, after spending two years as a children's puppeteer and science communicator, John turned to full-time stand-up. He came third in the Green Faces National Championships and immediately began a world tour that hasn't finished yet!
