She auditioned for WAAPA age 17 and was accepted into the performance program. Completing her advanced diploma and degree she graduated the academy age 21. In the third year of her degree she started writing for Liberte a 10 piece indie/funk/pop band and has since played shows all over Perth with them from the convention centre to the Ellington Jazz Club, Jimmy’s Den, and the Left Bank.
After graduating WAAPA Mel not only worked professionally in original music but in covers with Rock/Pop band Blue Gene playing the pub/club scene in Perth. She also sang solo in multiple bars and restaurants throughout the city bringing her music to life with the keys and her voice.
Mel Kay plays a range of solo covers and original music her aim to cater to each event and venue to add the right atmosphere to each occasion.
